How to Play Nerdle

Nerdle is a math-based word puzzle. You have 6 attempts to guess a hidden 8-character equation. Each guess must be a valid mathematical equation — random character strings are rejected.

🟩 Green  Right character, right position.
🟪 Purple  Right character, wrong position.
⬛ Dark gray  Character not in the equation.
Valid equations only  Every guess must evaluate correctly: 3*8=24 is valid, 3*8=25 is not.

The History of Nerdle

Nerdle was created by Richard and Imogen Mann in January 2022, directly inspired by the Wordle phenomenon that swept the internet that month. Richard, a data scientist, swapped Wordle's letters for math equations and released it as a side project.

Within weeks, Nerdle had millions of daily players and spawned dozens of variants: Mini Nerdle (6 chars), Instant Nerdle, and Speed Nerdle. It remains one of the most successful math-focused casual games on the web.

Does operator precedence apply? +

Yes. Nerdle follows standard PEMDAS: multiplication and division are evaluated before addition and subtraction. "1+2*3=7" is correct because 2*3=6 first, then +1=7.

Can equations have negative results? +

On Burmly Nerdle, valid equations have positive integer results. "3-5=-2" would be rejected. All target equations on Burmly evaluate to a positive integer.
