How to Play Lights Out

Lights Out is a logic puzzle played on a grid of lights. Some lights start on, others off. Each time you click a light, it toggles — along with the four adjacent lights (up, down, left, right). Your goal: turn every light off.

Click  Toggle the clicked light and its 4 orthogonal neighbours.
Goal  Turn all lights off. Edge and corner cells have fewer neighbours, so they affect a smaller area.
Timer  Starts on your first click. Try to solve it as fast as possible.
Solvable  Every puzzle is generated backwards from the solved state — no luck required.

Lights Out Strategy

Lights Out looks simple but has surprising depth. The key insight most players miss: the order of clicks doesn't matter. Clicking cell A then B gives the same result as B then A. This means you're solving a system, not a sequence.

Work row by row
A classic solving method: go through row 1 top-to-bottom, clicking cells in row 2 that will fix lights still on in row 1. Repeat down. The last row requires a specific pattern — with practice you'll memorise it.
Fewer clicks = better score
Since click order doesn't matter, you never need to click the same cell more than once (clicking it twice cancels out). An optimal solution uses exactly N clicks, where N is the minimum needed.
